Ms. Giacomi developed “a terrible infection in [her] left leg and left arm” that staff at the Blarisville nursing home noticed, but that examining physician Dr. James Heaton failed to timely evaluate.
“The healthcare providers at Union County Nursing Home and Union General Hospital and her doctor, Dr. James Heaton, failed to call a surgeon for nearly seven days when Giacomi had major drainage and a foul odor coming from her infected foot along with a foot that was turning green.
The delayed intervention amounted to negligence that caused Giacomi “to suffer an arm and leg amputation unnecessarily.”
The Defendants failed to recognize the common signs and symptoms of a worsening infection and took no action to involve a surgeon or transfer Ms. Giacomi to another hospital until it was too late. “As a result, Ms. Giacomi suffered for seven days at Union County Nursing Home and Union General Hospital, and she continues to suffer to this day without an arm and a leg.
